Dear Parks & Recreation Commissioners:
I am writing to express my full support for the Newton 9/11 Committee’s building of a 9/11 memorial to the those who perished in that tragic event, and to those who’s bravery was on display that day.
The September 11th event was not a routine event. It marked a turning point in the way our entire American society thinks about and reacts to the ongoing threat of terrorism.
It is highly appropriate that the city of Newton take this 10th anniversary opportunity to pause, reflect, and honor the memory and the service of those impacted, and there is no greater appropriate place to do so than the grounds of city hall.
While other locations may be technically possible, I strongly encourage you to approve locating the memorial on the grounds of city hall.
I believe the design to be tasteful and environmentally fitting, and this location will provide the gravitas and honor appropriate in this unique situation.
Thank you.
Charlie Shapiro
